Macau & Hong Kong Island

On Wednesday the rest of the gang went back to Disneyland and Geoff and I decided to go explore Macau.

It was a bit of a complicated process working out where to buy tickets for the turbojet and because Macau is a separate administrative area we had to go through Customs.

It took an hour via turbojet to get there. Casino reps and their buses were at the terminal to poach us as soon as we got off the ferry - we decided to go for a bit of a walk around central Macau instead. Lots of casinos and giant apartment buildings for me to photograph.

We took a cable car up to the lighthouse and church on the peak, which provided a great view over Macau.

We walked down to the cobblestoned St Lazarus' church district and across to the ruins of the Church of St Paul, which of course was swarming with tourists, but very beautiful.

The old Portuguese area of the City was absolutely beautiful. Such a contrast to the big grid system of the other part of Macau. We spent a few hours walking the winding streets, dotted with churches and small public squares.

In the end we realised we'd literally walked half the length of Macau!

Yesterday I took the MTR into Hong Kong Central and walked a big circuit around Lai Kwai Fong, Soho, Sheung Wan and then took a double decker tram (Melbourne really needs these!) over to Wan Chai for some more walking around.

Some of my favourite photos from my walk:

A few observations I've made about Hong Kong...
1) Just realised this is the most developed place I've visited so far (except maybe Singapore)..
"I can drink the tap water?!?! Whaaaaaaat..."
2) There's no graffiti on the trains or in public toilets... How do they manage this?
3) Public toilets are immaculate. I went in some yesterday expecting it to be an absolute hell hole but it was spotless and even had soap, hand sanitised and a fan! Bit of a contrast to the public toilets in Melbourne. I think the secret is in the on-site attendant/cleaner.

Last day at Disneyland Resort so we went for a swim/spa. Then I got news I've won a big $$$ scholarship to go and study informal settlements throughout South America so I went and ordered myself a glass of Moët (and an amaaaazing dessert)!

Cheers! X
