24h in Transit AKA the Scenic Route

Well after a delayed flight I ended up leaving Brisbane at midday on Sunday. My aunt and uncle Andrew and Anita and my 5yr old cousin Megan (as well as Anita's parents Geoff and Sylvia) left a couple of hours before me, on a direct Qantas flight to Hong Kong. We said fake goodbyes, as we'd kept it a secret from Megan that I'd be joining them in Hong Kong. She was pretty sad that we'd only got to see each other for a day this time.

4 hours to Darwin, a half hour stopover, then just over 4 hours to Manila - my home for the night.

Flying over the Philippines at night was absolutely breathtaking. It was a full moon, which illuminated a sea of clouds or in clearer areas, the sea itself. The rest of the sky was so inky black that it blended with the sea and it was impossible to define the horizon. The glittering city lights often seemed to float right into the sky and merge with the stars. Very poetic stuff.

I thought I'd be too uncomfortable to sleep and would just read all night but actually it was the most comfortable airport sleep I've had. Philippine airlines had two rooms with armchairs designated for hobo travellers like me. Two armchairs shifted together actually made a comfortable bed.

The staff woke us in the morning and ferried us back up to the departure area - wifi!
My experience of Manila:

Just a 2h flight to Hong Kong and a short taxi to Disneyland Resort where I'm crashing in my darling aunt and uncle's hotel room (hopefully Megan doesn't kick me too much in her sleep). Haven't even left Lantau island yet and already getting a good look at some crazy scaled repetitive architecture.

They were all out at Disneyland when I arrived, and we'd planned for me to hide under the covers and surprise Megan when they arrived back at the hotel. She was absolutely speechless - very amusing.

This hotel is absolutely ridiculously amazing. I had 2 staff meet my taxi to take me inside, dressed in ridiculous Disney-esque gold suits. The lobby is complete with giant Christmas tree, chandeliers, and alternating live orchestra or pianist.

It's Christmas, baby!

We all went for a swim this afternoon in the resort pool - complete with waterslide. We trundled out in matching bath robes. Saaa fancy.

Tomorrow is a full day in Disneyland then I think I'll head for Macau on Wednesday ;)
